Young Athletes League !
Morpeth Harriers Young Athletes squad were badly hit by a
number of absentees when they finished fourth in their opening
Northern League Division 1 match at Monkton Stadium on Sunday 4th May.
Nevertheless Team Managers Tony Ward and Josie Goodfellow did their
level best to tactically place those who could turn out to the best advantage.
Despite the loss of athletes there were a number of
excellent performances across the three age groups.
In the Under 17 Womens section Rachel Moody claimed
excellent victories in the Long Jump (4.23m) and Shot (8.57m).
Stevie Goodfellow went alone in the Triple Jump
to gain maximum points with a best of 8.66m
and followed that up with an excellent second in the 200m (28.9s)
with Kathryn Lake taking second in the B race in 29.0s.
After a hard day at York the previous day competing for the Seniors,
Deborah Oakley competed in the 3000m to finish third in 11m32.3s,
then later finished third in the 1500m in 5m35.4s,
and Jessica Caldwell took the B race in 5m48.3s.
There were good performances to be seen in the
Under 15 age group with Rachel Denton, Hannah Rank
and Jonny Nisbet all capturing the spotlight.
Denton claimed a superb victory in the Girls 800m in 2m23.3s,
a new personal best, which saw her finish well clear of her nearest rival.
Ellen Welsh ran well to finish second in the B race in 3m05.3s
Morpeth claimed an excellent double victory in the Girls 1500m
with Hannah Rank taking the A race in 5m06.7s
and Miriam Inverarity took the B race in 5m50s.
Rank also finished second in the Shot with 5.92m.
There were excellent second places for Anna Matthews
in the 200m (28.8s) and Ismay Kitson in the Javelin (10.77m)
Jonny Nisbet and Tom McGhee combined well to claim an
excellent Morpeth double victory in the Boys 200m
with Nisbet taking the A race in 27.4s and McGhee the B race in 31.2s.
Nisbett also finished second in the 1500m (4m47.2s)
a new personal best by almost thirty seconds,
and McGhee finished second in the Long Jump with 4.15m.
Another highlight was Philip Caldwell's second in the 80m Hurdles with 18.1s.
In the Under 13 age group Joe Robertshaw's victories in the 100m (13.9s)
and 200m (27.9s) certainly caught the eye.
Added to that he was agonisingly 9cm short of making a reasonable claim
of a hat-trick of victories with his best Long Jump effort of 3.91m.
In the Girls events Adele Stewart and Eve Shashova's performances
were outstanding with a double victory being claimed in the 800m
with respective clockings of 2m51.1s and 2m58.9s.
Stewart also finished second in the High Jump with a best clearance of 1.10m
and Steph Purvis came second in the B String with 1.05m.
There were very satisfactory debuts for Ryan Dodds and Liam Brooks.
Dodds finished third in the 75m Hurdles (16.7s)
and Brooks also placed third in the 1500m in 5m30.9s.
FINAL MATCH RESULT
1st Harrogate 360pts,
2nd Lincoln Wellington 354pts,
3rd Chester Le Street 233pts,
4th Morpeth 195pts.

Senior Men & Womens Northern League Division 2
!
Huntington Stadium in York was the venue for Morpeth Harriers
first taste of Senior Men and Womens Northern League
Division 2 Track and Field action on Saturday 3rd May.
Despite a number of gaps in both sections, some good characteristic
performances saw them finish fourth of the six competing teams.
One of the pleasing major highlights from Morpeth's
point of view was to see debutant Ian Mawdesley
win the A race of the Mens 110m Hurdles in fine style in 18.7s,
with Team Captain John Thompson throwing in his all by taking
his place in the B race to finish second in 22.7s.
Mawdesley again played his part enormously by winning
the B race of the 400m Hurdles in 69.4s
to add to Ray Kirkup's fourth in the A race in 66.2s.
Chris Sampson ran well to beat City of York's Andy Hilton
to the finish line in the 3000m Steeplechase to win in 9m32.6s,
and David Swinburne finished second in the B race in 10m15.4s.
In the Mens Field events Angus Wood did well to finish second
in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.65m.
Paul Appleby threw 37.62m to finish third in the Javelin,
and John Thompson backed him up well to finish third
in the B event with 36.00m.
In the Womens events Laura Weightman landed a victory in the 800m
clocking 2m11.6s which was fractionally just adrift of her personal best.
Natalie Young backed her up well by taking second in the B race in 2m27.7s.
Weightman also did well when finishing third in the 400m in 60.3s
and Rachel Archer finished second in the B race with 64.1s.
Elaine Telford finished third in both the 100m (12.8s) and the 200m (26.6s)
Archer backed her up in the 200m when finishing fourth in the B race in 27.4s.
Aiveen Fox finished third in the 3000m in 11m29.2s
and Deborah Oakley finished second in the B race in 11m56.2s.
In the Womens Field events as usual it was Claire Reid
at the helm of Morpeth's points haul by finishing second
in the Discus (30.99m) and second in the Shot (10.07m)
FINAL MATCH SCORE
1st City of York 447pts,
2nd Gateshead Harriers 345pts,
3rd Middlesbrough (Mandale) 340pts,

Jonathan Taylor clocked 3m45.61s, a new personal best,

back to her sparkling best as she knocked a whole three seconds
off her personal best time in the 1500m at the first Start Fitness
North Eastern Athletics League meeting held at a rainswept
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Wednesday 30th April.
She certainly took every advantage when running as the only Female
against older Men and Boys, to cross the finish line in an excellent 4m23.4s.
Another good Morpeth performer on the night was Joe Robertshaw,
who won the Under 13 Boys 100m in 13.5s.
Other Morpeth performers on the night were
Katie Plant Under 15 Girls 75m Hurdles (16.0s) and 100m (14.5s)

Another Morpeth athlete having a splendid run on the night
was Marcus Cram, who clocked a new personal best of 2m06.3s
to finish third in the D race against older opposition.
With 150 metres to race Cram was still lying in fifth place,
however his acceleration in the finish straight paid enormous dividends.
With the Scottish Junior Championships beckoning

Norwich Union World Trials & UK Track & Field
Championships !
Morpeth Harrier Ian Hudspith ran a seasons best of 14m19.99s
to finish tenth in the final of the Mens 5000m
at the Norwich Union World Trials & UK Track & Field
Championships at Manchester on Sunday 29th July.
Hudspith was always up with the leaders until around 3000m,
which was reached in 8m22.19s, however after that eventual winner
Mo Farah of Newham and Essex Beagles turned up the heat
and gradually people became detatched.
To finish in a seasons best however was quite pleasing and Ian will take
that strength into his autumn plans which include the Great North Run,
and hopefully another outing in a Marathon next year.
Not so pleased however will be fellow Morpeth Harrier Nick McCormick
who finished fourth behind pre-race favourite Andy Baddeley in 3m46.15s.
After winning the faster of the two heats on the Saturday,
McCormick felt quite confident of a UK medal, however to be run out of it
at the end of the day will be quite a disappointment.
Dan Samuels of Morpeth Harriers went out in the heat
won by Andy Baddeley on the Saturday.
Samuels clocked 3m52.14s to finish eleventh, which was around six seconds
adrift of his personal best and four seconds down on his best for the season.

BMC Grand Prix !
A night of superb athletics on Saturday 21st July,
saw several Morpeth Harriers achieve their aims of fast times
at the BMC Grand Prix meeting in Solihull.
Ian Hudspith clocked his best time for over 12 years in the 3000m
when he finished ninth in 8m04.89s, and in the same event Dan Samuels
knocked around ten seconds off his best when he finished fourteenth in 8m10.06s.
Hudspith's best ever clocking for the distance was recorded in 1995
when he ran 8m03.9s, however he can feel well pleased with this latest outing.
Chris Sampson achieved a lifetime best of 14m46.58s
when he finished eleventh in the 5000m.
For the third time in a month Jonny Young bettered his old figures in the 1500m.
He finished sixth in the C race in 3m52.99s.
Jonathan Taylor finished thirteenth in the 1500m B race in 3m51.98s.
Sadly Nick McCormick doesn't seem to be able to raise his form,
as once again he disappointed by finishing fifth in the 1500m A race in 3m42.15s,
and he had three fellow Brits in front of him, and with the World Trials approaching
this weekend he carries the look of a worried man.
He and his Coach Lindsey Dunn must work on the situation in the hope
that he can begin get back to the form he showed when
winning representative honours two to three years ago.

Young Athletes League ( 5 )
There were some good performances amongst the Morpeth Harriers Young Athletes
who managed to turn out for their club at the final Northern One East match
at Middlesbrough's Claireville Stadium on Sunday 22nd July.
In the Under 17 Mens age group Andrew Toothill made a clean
sweep of his chosen events for the very first time.
He comfortably won the Hammer with 22.22m and then went on
to achieve maximum success in the Discus (32.94m) and Shot (9.84m)
Andrew also gave service to the Under 17 Mens 4x400m squad who finished second in 4m04.3s.
Another noteable Under 17 Mens success for Morpeth came in the 800m
with Karl Taylor winning in 2m04.4s and Alistair Douglass taking the B race in 2m13.0s.
Staying with the Boys events Marcus Cram secured a superb win
in the Under 15 Boys 1500m with an excellent 4m29.05s,
despite having to endure a torrential downpour at the time and some
stern opposition from a Middlesbrough Mandale athlete.
Cram also finished second in the Under 15 Boys Long Jump with an excellent 4.81m.
In the Under 13 Boys 200m Jack Hepple took the A race in 28.1s
and Joe Robertshaw ran well to win the B race in 29.3s.
Hepple was involved in another double Morpeth victory in the Long Jump.
He won the A event with a best of 4.35m and Jamie Esson took the B event with 3.20m.
This pairing also went in the 800m with Hepple finishing second
in the A event in 2m25.7s, and Esson coming home second in the B race in 2m50.4s.
Joe Robertshaw clocked 14.8s to finish second in the Under 13 Boys 100m
and Jonny Anderson finished second in the B race in 15.4s.
Natalie Young clocked 2m18.8s to win the Under 17 Womens 800m.
Rachel Moody won the Under 17 Womens 80m Hurdles in 15.0s,
then went on to gain more points for her club by supporting Kate Charnley's
win in the Shot (8.60m), by winning the B event with a best of 6.77m.
Stevie Goodfellow had an excellent win im the Under 17 Womens Triple Jump (8.80m)
Rebecca Gibson won the Under 17 Womens Long Jump with a best of 4.15m,
and also took the B event of the Discus (17.33m) supporting
Kate Charnley's 18.13m which saw her finish second in the A event.
Gibson also finished second in the Javelin with 17.65m.
Morpeth's best Under 15 Girls result of the day came in the
rainswept 1500m with Rachel Denton clocking 4m57.07s to
win the A race, and Hannah Rank taking the B race in 5m05.05s.
Courtney Dodd made an excellent clearance of 1.52m
to win the Under 15 Girls High Jump.
Dodd also finished fourth in the A race of the 100m in 14.7s
and Katie Plant took the B race in 15.0s.
Steph Courty finished second in the A race of the
Under 13 Girls 800m in 2m41.3s, and she also
finished second in the 70m Hurdles in 13.2s.
Shannon Henley finished second in the Under 13 Girls Long Jump
with 3.56m and Georgia Latto took the B event with 3.35m.
Morpeth finished third in the Under 13 Girls and Under 13 Boys
4x100m Relays in respective times of 62.0s and 61.6s.
FINAL MATCH RESULT
1st Lincoln Wellington 331.5pts
2nd Middlesbrough Mandale 328pts
3rd Harrogate 301pts
4th Morpeth 233.5pts
This means that Morpeth must await the results
of other matches to discover whether relegation looms.

UK Schools International !
Despite suffering a horrendous journey to Newport in Wales
lasting 12 hours because of severe weather conditions,
Morpeth Harrier Laura Weightman still managed to pull
of an excellent victory in the Girls 1500m at the
UK Schools International on Saturday 21st July.
She and Shildon's Kate Avery, both representing England,
once again competed strongly with each other,
however Weightman gained victory by just over a
second with her clocking of 4m31.12s.

English Schools Track & Field Championships !
In a busy week of athletics activity several Morpeth Harriers
gave performances of high quality.
Top of those performers was undoubtedly Alnwick Duchess High School
pupil Laura Weightman, who in clocking a lifetime best of 4m29.44s
pushed herself up to sixth in the UK Under 17 Womens 1500m rankings,
and took the Intermediate Girls title for the distance,
at the English Schools Track and Field Championships held at
Birmingham's Alexander Stadium on Saturday 14th July.
The gusty winds were certainly not the best conditions for quick times,
however everything went right for Weightman who judged the race
to perfection throughout, and with 320 metres remaining put in a kick
that at last saw her draw clear of her closest rivals that included
Durham's Kate Avery who managed to hang on for the
Silver medal placing, also in a new personal best time of 4m30.51s,
which in turn sees her rise to eighth in the rankings.
Both Weightman and Avery will now compete for England
this weekend at the Schools International held in Wales.
After that Weightman plans to run the 800m at the
AAA's Championships next month, and another outing over 1500m
is penned in at the National Youth Games in Coventry.
Laura`s coach and Morpeth Harriers Secretary Mike Bateman commented,
Laura ran well despite the difficult conditions and credited her
for her maturity in listening to all the advice given,
and that her pre-race preparation had played a big part in her winning the title,
it was a title that was justly deserved, he also paid tribute to Avery's gutsy performance,
however Laura had proved just too strong for her on the day.
Laura's Gold was one of four won by Northumberland over the two day Championships.
Other Morpeth Harriers in action at Birmingham were Karl Taylor,
Zoe Armstrong, Natalie Young and Rachel Denton.
Taylor ran in the Intermediate Boys 1500m Steeplechase,
and for his part with 300m remaining he was still in with a chance of a medal placing.
However as the finishing pace hotted up he ran out of steam
and faded to ninth with a finishing time 4m44.67s.
Armstrong and Young went out in the heats of the Intermediate Girls 800m,
both finishing fifth in their respective races with
slightly below par clockings of 2m20.86s and 2m20.64s
Denton was disappointed to finish fourteenth in the second of two heats
for the Junior Girls 1500m in 5m00.81s, but will have gained great experience from the trip,
and will return next year to compete in the same age group with renewed vigour.

Norwich Union British Grand Prix !
The torrential downpour and cool conditions certainly didn't help
Morpeths Nick McCormick to improve on his seasons best in the
1500m at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix meeting
at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium on Sunday 15th July.
In the race won by fellow Brit Andrew Baddeley, who is in the form
of his life at present, McCormick struggled to make any impact,
and came home in tenth place in 3m38.58s, just short of his seasons best,
and around five seconds adrift of his lifetime best.
However McCormick still remains positive,
and knows there is something there that will release itself soon.
Running against the likes of Bernard Lagat, Rui Silva and Nicholas Kemboi
will only serve to strengthen his experience in big time events.

Eleven days after producing a lifetime personal best of 3m54.30s
in the 1500m at the BMC Watford Grand Prix,
Morpeths Jonny Young returned to the same venue and
clocked new figures of 3m53.66s to finish fourth behind
two Kenyan's and an American in the A race the BMC Gold Standard meeting.
Meanwhile staying with BMC events, Morpeths Dan Samuels finished
second in the 800m B race at the Trafford Grand Prix at Stretford, Manchester
in a new personal best time of 1m52.94s.
At the same meeting fellow Morpeth clubmates Jonathan Taylor

League Report 4.......
Northern England Track & Field League (4)
The curtain came down on Morpeth Harriers domestic Track and Field
programme on Sunday 5th August at Claireville Stadium, Middlesbrough,
and despite missing a number of athletes in certain areas,
those who did turn out ensured a well earned third place,
which at the end of the day will see Morpeth finish third
or fourth in the final table once everything has been fully analysed.
Double wins by Jonathan Taylor, Laura Weightman and
Claire Reid contributed greatly to Morpeth's effort along
with a number of other excellent performances.
Jonathan Taylor won both the 800m and 1500m events in
respective times of 1m53.7s and 4m00.1s, although both
outside his personal bests. were well achieved considering
he wasn't pushed all the way to the line by threatening opposition.
Maximum points were achieved by Morpeth in the 1500m
with Nick Swinburn taking the B race in 4m13.9s.
In the 800m B race Karl Taylor (no relation) finished fourth in 2m07.4s.

Laura Weightman won the Womens 400m in 60.6s,
and also took the 800m in 2m27.1s.

Zoe Armstrong threw 15.38m to take third place in the B event of the Discus.
Armstrong also finished second in the 1500m in 5m05.7s.

John Thompson won the 110m Hurdles in 23.1s.
After an absence of six or seven years Andrew Wake
returned to the region for the weekend and took
third place for Morpeth in the Mens Pole Vault.

and the second placed athlete,
however Andrew found his countback only good for third.

League Report 3.......
Northern England Track & Field League (3)
Eight A String and five B String victories, including four maximum points efforts,
helped Morpeth Harriers Senior Men and Womens Track and Field
squad achieve their best result so far this season
in their Northern League Division 2 third round match at
Gateshead's International Stadium on Sunday 8th July.
They finished third behind strong Middlesbrough (Mandale) and Gateshead squads,
and now look to be entirely safe from relegation worries.
On this occasion it was the Womens performances that contributed
most to the 301 total points haul that the Northumbrian club achieved.
Claire Reid and Josie Goodfellow worked extremely hard
in the Discus, Shot Hammer and Javelin events.
Reid won both the Discus (32.85m) and Shot (11.26m) events,
and finished fourth in the Hammer (22.50m)
which is likely to be a club record, and another fourth in the Javelin (16.63m)
Goodfellow weighed in well with a B event victory in the Shot (7.39m)
a second in the B event Discus (18.51m), and a third in the B event Hammer (16.33m)
and another third in the B event Javelin (16.04m)
Goodfellow also found time to score more points
as the B event competitor in the Long and Triple Jump.
In the Long Jump Laura Weightman finished fourth in the A event
with 4.41m and Goodfellow backed her up well
by a third place in the B event with 3.69m.
In the Triple Jump it was a mother and daughter effort,
with Stevie Goodfellow finishing fifth in the A event (8.92m)
and Josie finishing third in the B event with 8.37m.
Elaine Telford put all her injury worries behind her and narrowly
missed out for victory in the 100m with 13.0s,
however ran excellently to claim a marginal win in the 200m with 26.9s.
Morpeth gained excellent B race victories in these events courtesy
of Rachel Archer with respective clockings of 13.3s and 27.0s.
There were maximum point victories for Morpeth
in the Womens 800m and 3000m events.
As the English Schools approaches Natalie Young appears to be
rounding into better form, and her win in
the 800m A race in 2m19.4s is testimony to this.
Stevie Goodfellow snatched a B race victory in 2m27.0s
Sarah Graham won the A race of the 3000m in 10m59.3s,
and Rachel Adams claimed victory in the B race with 11m37.1s.
Laura Weightman was a clear winner of the 400m in 59.1s.
Jane Mooney finished second in the 1500m in 4m57.3s.
Morpeth's 4x100m Womens Relay squad finished third in 53.2s,
and their 4x400m squad placed fourth in 4m40.4s.
In the Mens events, Morpeth's best performances belonged to Jonny Young,
who won both the 800m and 1500m events in 1m58.7s and 4m08.6s.
Stephen Appleby finished fourth in both the Discus and Shot
with respective best efforts of 35.00m and 9.62m.
John Thompson finished fourth in the Javelin with 32.72m.
Morpeth's Mens 4x100m squad finished fourth in 49.0s.

Vets Track & Field Championships !
Morpeth Harrier Les Atkinson broke his own Veterans North East
Over 50 Mens 1500m record by a whole second when he clocked 4m25.4s
to take the category title at the Track and Field Championships
held at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium on Saturday 7th July.
Atkinson fought out a very close battle with the younger Phil Walker
of Blaydon for second place overall with only North Shields Poly's
Tommy Brannon in front of them claiming outright victory over the field.
The field also included Morpeth's Archie Jenkins who was winning
the first of his two Over 55 veteran Mens titles of the day in a time of 4m50.8s
Jenkins other Over 55 title came in the 5000m where he clocked 18m03s.
Paul Bentley of Morpeth guested as an Over 60
in the 5000m, and he clocked 21m33.3s.

BMC Meeting At Watford !
In terms of performance Morpeth Harriers Chris Sampson,
Jonathan Young and Ian Hudspith all had excellent runs at the
BMC meeting at Watford on Saturday night.( 30th June )
Sampson and Young both produced lifetime bests
and Hudspith was fractionally just outside his seasons best,
on a night where other notable Morpeth runners
didn't quite achieve their targets.
Sampson finished eighth in a classy 3000m Steeplechase,
however in a brand new best of 9m09.11s, which was virtually
six seconds inside his previous figures, and excellent to say the least.
Jonathan Young will certainly take a great deal of delight
from his third place in the Mens 1500m G race
which saw him clock a new best of 3m54.30s.
In a classy 10,000m Ian Hudspith finished fourth in 29m17.64s.
Nick McCormick finished fourth in a slowly run Mens 800m B race
which saw him clock what to him will be a disappointing 1m49.90,
considering that his great rival Andy Baddeley
had clocked 1m46.32s to win the A race.
Dan Samuels finished fourth in the 1500m C race in 3m48.90s.
In the D race Jonathan Taylor finished fifth in 3m51.08s,
and Michael Morris finished tenth in the F race in 3m58.56s.

Young Athletes League ( 4 )
Morpeth Harriers finished second to a very strong Hallamshire
squad in their fourth round National Young Athletes Northern
One East match, held at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium on Sunday 24th June
It was actually a very close battle throughout for second place
between the Northumbrian club and the hosts,
their North East rivals Jarrow and Hebburn,
and in the end only eleven points gave Morpeth the upper hand.
On the performance side for Morpeth, the slightly bigger
haul of points came from their female athletes.
Laura Weightman secured an 800m and 1500m double at Under 17 level.
Her 800m victory in 2m11.1s saw her slightly better her previous figures,
and her 1500m was a fairly modest 4m49.5s.
Weightman then went on to anchor a Morpeth 4x300m squad
to victory with superb help from Zoe Armstrong,
Stevie Goodfellow and Natalie Young.
Armstrong and Goodfellow also had their own individual successes.
Armstrong won the 800m B race in 2m19.2s, which although
was a little short of her personal best, was still a strong
performance, and she rewarded herself later when she
finished second to Jarrow's speedy Janet Abladey in a new personal
best of 43.7s in the 300m, with Goodfellow taking the B race in 45.9s.
Goodfellow also clocked a new personal best of 27.9s
when she also finished second to Abladey in the earlier run 200m.
Morpeth gained maximum points in the 1500m when
Natalie Young won the B race in 4m54.4s.
In a steady Under 17 Womens 3000m Morpeth's
Deborah Oakley won in 12m09.9s.
In the Field events Morpeth had a double victory with
Rachel Gibson taking the Discus A event with 18.01m
and Natalie Young won the B event with 11.58m.
In the Under 17 Mens events Morpeth's Greg Swinburn
was in fine form as he won both the 100m (12.0s) and 200m (23.8s) events,
and only just lost out by a whisker in the 400m where he clocked 54.6s.
In the 100m Daniel Hedley secured maximum points by winning
the B race in 12.3s, however is still finding life hard in the
200m where he finished third in the B race in 25.1s.
However both Swinburn and Hedley played their part well
in a Morpeth Under 17 Mens 4x100m squad that won in 49.3s
with further help coming from Karl Taylor and Alistair Douglass.
Taylor and Douglass also had their taste of individual success in the 400m Hurdles.
The A race was won by Taylor in 64.7s and Douglass took the B race in 69.8s.
Taylor also won the 1500m Steeplechase in 5m00.2s
and finished second in the earlier run 1500m in 4m21.8s.
The Under 17 Mens Field events saw dominant performance
by Morpeth throwers Alan Richmond and Andrew Tootal.
There were double victories in the Hammer, Discus and Shot.
In the hammer Richmond took the A event with a best of 26.99m
and Tootal took the B event with 19.20m.
Tootal won the Discus A event with 29.57m
and Richmond won the B event with 29.02m.
In the Shot Richmond putted 10.77m for victory
and Tootal took the B event with 9.73m.
In the Under 15 Girls events, Morpeth's best track performances
came from Rachel Denton and Emma Hastings.
Denton would have wished for victory, however was unfortunate
to come up against Hallamshire's very much in form Cali Thackery
(daughter of former Great Britain International Carl)
in the 800m and took second place in 2m25.8s
which was an excellent new personal best.
Mariska Simpson backed Denton up well when
she took the B race in 2m39.5s.
Hastings finished second in the A race of the 200m in 27.7s
and Kathryn Lake finished second in the B race in 28.5s.
Morpeth's only outright victory in the Under 15 Girls events came
in the Long Jump where Courtney Dodd took the A event
with 4.45m and Emma Hastings got 4.25m to take the B event.
Dodd finished third in the A event of the 75m Hurdles in 14.5s
and Katie Plant took the B race in 16.0s.
In her first outing for the club Jessica Caldwell
finished third in the 1500m in 5m43.7s.
Sadly Morpeth were once again let down by a lack of Under 15 Boys,
and only Tom Brookes's second in the 800m in 2m31.9s,
and Philip Shuttleworth's bravery to finish third in the
1500m in 4m59.5s despite a painfull injured heel are worthy of mention here.
That heel injury could well prove a problem, however Shuttleworth
persevered in his quest for points for his club as he competed in the
200m B race (30.8s) and 400m A race (70.1s) and the 4x100m in addition.
The Under 13 Girls age group events saw Georgia Jobes
win the A event of the 75m in 10.9s and she got
a second in the 150m in 21.5s.
In the 70m Hurdles Steph Courty (daughter of former Morpeth Harriers
Womens Team Captain Susan) finished second in the A race in 13.4s,
and Katie Tiffin finished second in the B race in 14.8s.
Steph also finished second in the A race of the 800m in 2m39.8s.
Morpeth's Under 13 Girls 4x100m Relay squad finished
third in 62.1s courtesy of Steph Courty, Aillidh McCallister-Williams,
Adelle Stewart and Georgia Jobes.
Jack Hepple clocked a new personal best of 26.4s when
he coasted to victory in the Under 13 Boys 200m.
Morpeth also produced an excellent result in the 1500m
with Johnny Nesbitt winning the A race in 5m12.9s,
and Daniel Bowman taking the B race in 5m34.4s.
There was also an excellent Morpeth result in the Long Jump
where Jack Hepple achieved his second personal best
performance of the day to win the event with 4.81m,
and Jamie Esson sealed maximum points
with his 4.41m to take the B event.
Morpeth's Under 13 Boys 4x100m squad finished second
in 60.1s courtesy of Johnny Nesbitt, Jack Hepple,
Liam Fox and Jonny Anderson.
FINAL MATCH RESULT
1st Hallamshire 367pts
2nd Morpeth 305pts
3rd Jarrow & Hebburn 294pts
4th Boston 186pts.

Nick McCormick Fourth In European Cup 3000m !
Morpeth Harrier Nick McCormick finished fourth in the
Mens 3000m at the European Cup in Munich on Sunday 24th June.
After making all of the early pace McCormick found himself caught
by pre-race favourite Boubatella Tiarri of France with two laps remaining.
On the final lap it became obvious as Tiarri stole away for victory
in 7m51.32s, that McCormick was struggling with his finishing pace,
and the Briton just found himself run out of a minor place
in the final metres by the athletes of Russia and Poland.
On interview with BBC's Hazel Irvine, McCormick said that
in the end he just had no more to give, and said that he
needed to go back and work on his final 800m pace,
his finishing time of 8m02.55s was a bit disappointing
considering how strong he had felt going into the event.
It was indeed McCormick's early pace that had seen the field
well strung out after one and a half laps, and that had probably
played into the hands of Tiarri who had been the
only one to hang on in those stages.
The Morpeth Harrier may well run in Watford this Saturday
in the BMC event that includes the World Trials.

North of England Senior & Under 20 Track & Field Championships
Morpeth Harrier Claire Reid shattered her own club records
when she competed in the Senior Womens Shot and Discus Finals
at the North of England Senior and Under 20 Track and Field Championships
at Liverpool's Wavertree Stadium over Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th June.
Firstly on Saturday she won a Bronze medal in the Shot with a best of 11.33m
and she returned on the Sunday to produce a best of 38.13m to finish sixth in the Discus.
In the Under 20 Womens 1500m Final Delyth James clocked 4m48.51s
to finish seventh which was two seconds outside her personal best.
Jonathan Taylor finished sixth in the final of the Senior Mens 800m in 1m57.47s.
In the Senior Mens 5000m Final Mark Brown and Michael Morris
finished seventh and eighth in respective times of 14m50.19s and 14m53.97s.

New signing from Gosforth Harriers, Lewis Timmins just missed out for a
Bronze medal in the Senior Mens 1500m where he finished fourth in 3m58.53s.
Timmins who joined Morpeth last week, will have to serve
a suspension from team competition until the autumn.

Northern Schools Inter Counties Track & Field
Championships !
Morpeth Harrier Zoe Armstrong further convinced the
Northumberland Schools selectors to include her
in the party to travel to the English Championships in
Birmingham on the 13th and 14th July,
when she clocked a new personal best of 2m16.97s
for the Intermediate Girls 800m at the Northern Schools
Inter Counties Track and Field Championships,
held at Gateshead's International Stadium on Saturday 16th June.
It was the second time in a space of five days that Zoe
had gained the qualifying standard, and provided she can maintain her
current run of form she looks set to be on that bus.
Having missed the North East Counties Championships
through niggling injuries, this is just the sort of pickup the Pegswood
based athlete needs, to ensure her Track and Field campaign gets back on course.
Zoe found herself just beaten to the finish line by Durham's
Emma Toogood who clocked 2m16.54s for her victory.
Other good Northumberland performances on Saturday by
Morpeth Harriers came from Rachel Denton in the Junior Girls 1500m
and Karl Taylor in the Intermediate Boys 1500m Steeplechase.
Denton managed to draw clear from her Cumbrian opponent
in the last 200m to claim victory in 4m57.75s, unfortunately however that
is still outside the entry standard for the event at the English Schools.
Taylor also gained victory in 4m45.6s, which again is
agonisingly short of the entry standard required.

4m30.96s when winning the Intermediate Girls 1500m in 4m30.96s.
In the same age group over 800m, Zoe Armstrong was clearly back
to her sparkling best as she won in 2m19.82s from clubmate
Natalie Young who finished second in 2m23.41s.
Gregg Swinburn had a good day when he won the
Intermediate Boys 200m in 23.54s,

Jarrow on Monday 11th June.
Morpeth Harriers, Zoe Armstrong and Jack Hepple
both clocked new personal bests of 2m17.55s and 2m23.5s.
For Armstrong it meant that she had managed to get her

In Hepple's case it puts him back at the top of the regions
rankings for Under 13 Boys 800m.
Although he is the North East Champion his time had

It was the same story in the Hammer with Reid
getting 21.28m and Burgess getting 17.25m.
Aiveen Fox was far and clear a winner in the 3000m in 10m56.6s.
Fox also produced excellent performances in the 800m and 1500m

Morpeth welcomed back Melissa Anderson who finished

Young Athletes League ( 3 )
A closely contested third round UK Young Athletes Northern One East
match held at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium on Sunday 3rd June,
saw Morpeth Harriers finish fourth, however they were only eight points
adrift of third placed Spenborough and twenty five points adrift of
second placed Blaydon with Bingley a further thirty two points out in front as winners.
Missing athletes were a major problem as Morpeth struggled

Northern U17/15 Track & Field Championships !
A lifetime best performance of 4m32.85s, brought Gold medal
success in the Under 17 Womens 1500m for Morpeth
Harrier Laura Weightman, at the first day of the
North of England Under 17 and Under 15 Track and Field Championships,
held at South Leeds Stadium in Hunslet, Yorkshire on Saturday 26th May.
After finishing second in 4m49.01s in the slower of the two heats,
Weightman was pushed very hard to the finish line by her
North East rival Kate Avery of Shildon, who also achieved
a lifetime personal best of 4m32.95s, such was the closeness
between them as they hurtled to the finish line.
Weightman is certainly in terrific form at the moment,
and her recent 800m and 1500m wins at the North Eastern Counties
Championships with excellent clockings, plus her Female athlete
of the match award at her clubs recent National Young
Athletes match, are testimony that barring injury,
an excellent performance at the forthcoming English Schools
Championships will see more International honours
wing their way to the Duchess High School pupil.
With excellent continued guidance from Morpeth coaches
Mike Bateman and Tony Ward the future certainly looks rosy.
Two other Morpeth Harriers featured on the first day in Hunslet.
In the Under 15 Girls 1500m heats Rachel Denton clocked 5m05.29s
to finish fourth and clocked a personal best of
4m57.51s to finish seventh in the final.

added Track Athlete of the Match awards to their three
individual victories that they secured at the second round
National Young Athletes Northern One East match
held at Jarrow's Monkton Stadium on Sunday May 20th

Weightman won her award for her superb Under 17
Womens 800m victory in 2m13.9s, which although was two seconds
outside her personal best of 2m11s, was good enough to see her
finish thirteen seconds clear of her closest rival who
just happened to be Morpeth B runner Zoe Armstrong.
Armstrong has been having terrible problems with her calf muscles of late,
which was her reason for missing the North East Championships.
Although her time of 2m26.6s was way short of her best,
her presence was enough to give maximum points to her club.
Laura's other victories came in the 300m and 1500m

Stevie Goodfellow had an excellent run to take the 300m B race in 45.6s.

Jake Smith was second B finisher in the 1500m in 5m05.5s.
Morpeth welcomed back Sally Briggs to the sport after the

Start Fitness North Eastern Athletics League ( 5 )
A superb throw of 42.07m earned Claire Reid a victory and
a brand new Morpeth Harriers club record for the
Senior Womens Discus at the fifth and penultimate
Start Fitness North Eastern Athletics meeting held at
Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Wednesday 25th July.
She bettered her previous and the club record by nearly four metres,
and looks forward to bettering this figures again in the
forthcoming Scottish Championships held at Scotstoun.
Medal chances in the Discus are slim despite these figures,
as she has four athletes ahead of her in the rankings,
however there is a chance of a medal in the Shot.
Reid also won the Senior Womens Shot on the night with a best of 10.89m
which was a little short of her personal best and the club record.
Another Morpeth athlete in outstanding form on
Wednesday night was Marcus Cram who won the
Under 15 Boys 1500m in a new personal best 4m27.7s.
Cram was chasing Sunderland Harrier, J.Archer for the majority
of the event, however with 200m remaining he kicked
to go past the long term leader.
Archer rallied in the finishing stages, however Cram put in yet
another kick to clinch a well earned victory.
Karl Taylor of Morpeth Harriers paid the price of an over
exhuberant start to find himself just outsprinted to the finish line
in the combined Senior Junior and Under 17 1500m race 2.
Taylor clocked 4m25.8s for second place.
It was a good night for Taylor's fellow clubmate Alistair Douglass however.
Douglass finished two places behind Taylor in a new personal best of 4m27.6s.
Natalie Young of Morpeth finished eleventh in 4m48.9s.
The Under 13 Boys 1500m saw Morpeth's Jack Hepple
finish second in a new personal best of 4m57.1s.
His clubmate and training partner Jonny Anderson finished 6th in 5m38.6s.
Staying with the Under 13 Boys events, Morpeth's Joe Robertshaw
finished second in the 100m in 14.6s and third in the Shot with 4.80m.
Morpeth's Courtney Dodd was a little way short of her best when she
finished third in the Under 15 Girls High Jump with her clearance of 1.35m.
In the Under 17 Mens Discus, Morpeth's Alan Richmond
and Andrew Toothill dominated by finishing first and second
with respective best throws of 34.19m and 32.52m.
Rachel Archer was second Senior Woman in the 100m in 13.7s.
Daniel Hedley was ninth overall in the Senior Mens 100m in 12.8s.

Morpeths Marcus Cram produced a superb run
to win the Under 15 Boys 800m at the fourth Start Fitness
sponsored North Eastern Athletics League meeting held at
Gateshead's International Stadium on Wednesday 11th July.
Cram clocked a new personal best of 2m08.3s beating his
previous synthetic track figures by around six seconds.
However the athlete reported that he had clocked around 2m11s
on a grass track at a minor schools meet in Scotland a few weeks previous.
Other Morpeth track winners on the night were
Ian Hudspith and Joe Robertshaw.
A very much in form Hudspith was too much of a match
for his rivals in the 3000m, however believes that sterner
opposition would have brought him a better clocking than 8m19.0s.
Robertshaw was fractionally outside his personal best
when he won the Under 13 Boys 200m in 28.9s.
Emma Hastings won the Under 15 Girls Long Jump with a best of 3.97m,
and finished second in the 200m in 28.7s.
Daniel Hedley finished third in the Under 17 Mens 200m in 25.8s.

Competing in her new age group for the first time,
