2012 Grand Prix News !

Phil Walker Advert

This year’s Grand Prix has a new and much more open format which we hope
will appeal not only to those of you who competed in 2011, but also newer members,
or indeed those who hadn’t previously thought of taking part in the competition.

The aim of the Grand Prix competition is twofold: to provide a good standard of competition
within the club while also ensuring high levels of participation by Morpeth Harriers in local races.

After six years of successful sponsorship by Pam and Tony Woodcock Planning Consultants,
this year’s event sees Phil Walker, Chartered Financial Planner, stepping into the breach,
and after a lot of discussion, the format is being adjusted to include
a greater number of races and age-graded scores.

This should mean that you will get a score for the quality of your performance
which is irrespective of how many other members turn out,
and you won’t be looking anxiously over the start line to see
how many of your fellow club runners are participating !
In addition, as age-graded tables are being used,
the competition will now be open to all senior male and female members
who have signed up to take part, whether veterans or not.

The range of races is also being expanded.
Although this will mean more races to choose from –
including your best Park Run of 2012 for the Saturday morning early birds –
the number of races you will have to include to count is being reduced
from its present figure of 10 down to 6.

This means you shouldn’t have to race all the year round and,
if you are unfortunate enough to pick up an injury,
you will still have time to make the requisite number.

Click here to see list of 2012 GP Races

In the meantime, please do think about taking part in 2012.
The first race in the Grand Prix will be the Northumberland Half on 25th March,
so you have plenty of time to get training.

You will of course need to sign up for this year’s competition –
which is free to enter – and we will need dates of birth for the scoring system to work.

Get the ball rolling now by emailing the club with your details
or signing up in the club house soon.

Terry O’Gara !
Terry O’Gara
It is with our deepest sadness and regret that we announce
the very untimely death of Wallsend Harriers stalwart and former Secretary,
and recently honoured Veteran International Terry O’Gara.

Terry will indeed be well known, and fondly remembered
by both athletes and officials throughout the region,
both past and present, as being a fierce yet fair competitor in his prime,
and be long admired for his friendliness, and his honourable dedication
to his club and the sport of athletics in general.

For these reasons Terry was recently honoured as an unsung hero
at a recent regional awards ceremony at Newcastle’s Civic Centre,
a very much richly deserved honour.

We are sure that many people will wish to remember Terry
in their own special way in the coming weeks,
at this time all members of Morpeth Harriers would wish
to offer their deepest sympathies to his close family at their very sad loss,
and to all his friends and colleagues at Wallsend Harriers,
on the passing of a very much loyal and inspirational leader.

Terry's funeral took place on Tuesday 31st January 2012,
at St Columbas RC Church in Wallsend, at 10.00am.

Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays !
At the Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays on Sunday 22nd January,
the Veteran Mens relay saw an excellent battle being fought out
at the front by North Shields Poly and Sunderland Harriers,
with the North Tyneside outfit eventually gaining victory over the Wearsiders by twenty one seconds.

However a lot of eyes were very much on the battle for third place,
with Morpeth Harriers Veteran Mens B team eventually winning the day
over the B team by a slender seven second margin.
Paul Waterston at Durham on Sunday
Indeed it was a battle all the way from first leg,
when Paul Waterston (10m27s), for the B team, came home in fifth place,
and three places ahead of his A team colleague Terry Wall (10m41s).
On second leg, B team runner Phil Walker (10m43s) progressed up to third,
whilst A team runner Michael Thomsen (11m01s), also made progress by moving into fifth.

A very impressive last leg clocking by Chris Waugh (10m15s), fastest Over 50 Veteran Man,
managed to fend off the advances of Morpeth A team runner Neil Wilkinson,
who moved into fourth, following his equally impressive 9m50s,
which eventually emerged as the second fastest overall time,
behind North Shields Poly's Ian Twaddle (9m39s), clocked when he was scenting final leg victory.

With 12 of the 15 races in the Male Veterans and Women’s Grand Prix now completed,
there are only three opportunities to add to your points total: Brampton to Carlisle in November,
the Norman Woodcock in December (if it takes place this year – it has been cancelled for the last two)
and the Club Handicap.

With ten races to count, runners are approaching the point where
they can drop a low scoring race or, indeed, have now completed 10.

Paul and Marie remain clear leaders in their respective competitions,
with Rob Hancox and Jane Briggs in second place.

Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix Update 31.07.2011
After 9 of the possible 15 races, last year’s winner Paul Waterston has established
a clear lead at the top of the male tables. Behind him Rob Hancox is in a clear second place,
but the chasing group are starting to catch up – watch for Phil making a late charge.

Marie Drozdowicz had been the only competitor male or female to complete all possible races
till last Wednesday, when she missed out on the Elswick Cup through holiday.
Again, like Paul she has a clear lead with both Janes in strong second and third places.

So far, 63 club members have taken part in 9 races,
with similar numbers of male and female members;
the next race is our own Morpeth 10k on Tuesday,
for which entries can be taken on the night.

Raby Castle 10k !
He may not have achieved his hat-trick of victories, having won in 2007 and 2009,
however Morpeth Harrier Terry Wall could feel well pleased with his efforts to finish fourth,
and as first Veteran Man, in Sunday's annual Raby Castle 10k.

Wall, who very much played his part in securing Bronze medals for his club
in the previous weeks British Masters Road Relay's at Birmingham's Sutton Park,
was very much a leading force at the front of the event until the eight kilometre point,
and despite slipping back in the strong wind in the later stages,
managed to come home in 35m16s, and only fifty one seconds drift
of race winner John Archer of Low Fell Running Club.

British Masters Road Relay Championships !
Morpeths Vets Bronze Medallists
A hard earned but richly deserved bronze medal in the
British Masters Road Relay Championship made
Morpeth Harriers Veterans’ trip to Sutton Park on the outskirts
of Birmingham more than worthwhile on Saturday 21st May.

Competing in the new 35-45 Male Veterans 8 stage relay over the undulating three mile course,
the team left it late to move into a medal position, but their final success more than justified
the tricky choices team manager Paul Waterston had had to make over legs.

Having got the team off to a very solid start by coming home in fifteenth place on Leg 1
in a time of 16m8s (which was also forty second fastest overall leg of the day)
he was able to watch the drama unfold and offer strong encouragement to the rest of his team,
aided by Gordon Dixon, over the next two hours.

With a run of 16m28s Phil Walker was up next, moving the team up to eigth place
and just over a minute off the early leaders Bath and Wells,
but the Harriers’ challenge was stalled when last minute replacement Chris Waugh,
who was stepping down an age category, struggled with acute breathing difficulties
and was at one point asked to leave the course by marshals.
Fortunately, he was able to tough it out and get going again,
completing his leg in a time of 20 mins 27 secs.

With the team having slipped to thirty first at this point, clearly something special was needed,
and it came in the shape of a stupendous run by Ian Hudspith.
In great shape after recent runs at Elswick and Manchester,
he took the race by the scruff of the neck and produced a record-breaking leg of 14m8s,
and by so doing gained a walloping twenty-two places to move the team back into contention in ninth.
On a breezy day, his run broke the existing course record by 3 seconds
and was over a minute faster than any other runner (he was in fact the only runner to break 15 minutes).

George Hall kept the challenge on track on Leg 5 with a very respectable 16m47s,
coming home in tenth place, and he was followed by another Harrier in fine form,
Neil Wilkinson. He quickly got the bit between his teeth and,
by running 15mins 42 secs (the fourteenth fastest time of the day)
moved Morpeth up to fifth place.

It was clear at this point that many clubs had ‘front-loaded’ their teams,
with their strongest runners having gone out early doors,
but with Cambersland now having assumed nearly a three minute lead,
and Salford in second place nearly a minute behind them,
gold and silver positions were looking out of sight.
The team were sensing they were still within sniffing distance of a medal, however,
and a seventh leg of 16m46s by Alan Shepherd – whose recent running had been entirely
confined to a treadmill on an oil rig in the middle of the North Sea – confirmed their belief,
as he finally moved the team up into third place, with Highgate, Bath and Wells,
and past winners Herne Hill in very close attendance.

It was up to Terry Wall to keep in front of the chasing pack on the final leg,
and despite having a shortage of recent races under his belt,
he delivered in fine style, drawing on all his experience to tough out what was for the
rest of the team a nervous watch, as he came home in a time of 15m45s ahead of nearest chasers
Highgate. His time was also nineteenth fastest on the day.

Success was all the sweeter for being the North East’s
only representatives in either Male or Female competitions.

Congratulations must go to all who ran, but especially Vets Captain Paul Waterston
who worked tirelessly to assemble his squad and to keep it together despite the
inevitable last minute hitches, and for plotting carefully a strategy with his available runners.

Veterans Grand Prix Presentation Night !
Vets Grand Prix Presentation Night
Morpeth Harriers Gordon Dixon and Sue Smith were among those taking a well-earned break
from their London Marathon training when they collected their Grand Prix trophies for 2010
at the Harriers presentation evening held in the Joiners’ Arms last Thursday.

Sponsored generously once again by Pam and Tony Woodcock Planning,
the annual presentation night remains a highlight of the Harriers social season
and its continuing popularity for members was apparent in the large number of members and guests present,
including Evening Chronicle ‘Inside Track’ reporter Bill McGuirk and 26.2 physio Sean Maley.
Club chairman Bill Woods, meanwhile, hot-footed it down from the Northumberland Athletics Network
talk which he had helped organise at Morpeth Rugby Club to present the trophies in person,
and was later joined after delivering his own speech by President Jim Alder.

In the Male Veterans competition, Gordon Dixon was the overall winner
by the narrowest of margins of a single point over his longstanding
training partner and past winner, Paul Waterston, with Mike Winter,
in his first Grand Prix, a very consistent third place.

Twice a runner-up, Sue Smith was delighted to pick up the Ladies trophy
for the first time after a long season of hard work and racing.
Faye Glover finished in second place with Louise Laverton in third.

The club would like to extend its continuing gratitude to Pam and Tony
and to all those who donated prizes for the raffle, and to thank the Joiners’ Arms
for the much appreciated buffet and comfortable facilities.

The next two races in the 2011 Grand Prix, meanwhile,
are both in April – the Blyth Valley 10k on the 3rd (entries available on the day)
and the North Tyneside 10k on the 24th (no entries on the day, but entry still open).

2010 Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix Report and Mens Results !
The results for the 2010 Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix,
once again sponsored by Pam and Tony Woodcock Planning,
have now been ratified and the competition has been fierce as ever.

With last year’s winner Richard Driscoll having moved away and as a result unable to defend his title,
the Male Veterans competition went to the wire with a keenly contested struggle between
Gordon Dixon and Paul Waterston, with both runners changing veteran categories
during the course of the year and gratefully seizing extra bonus points when available.
Sadly however, with Phil Walker having a string of niggling injuries,
the much anticipated three-way challenge at the top of the leader board never quite materialised.

Following his April running in the Blyth 10k, Paul established an early lead which he held onto strongly,
while Gordon saved many of his best races for later in the season,
at one point completing three (the Links 10k, Exhibition Park 5k and Tynedale 10)
in one week in an effort to catch up.
The stage was set for a grand showdown in December – and then the snows came.
As a result, with no points available at the cancelled Norman Woodcock
or the Club Handicap (despite the best efforts of Tony Ward on several occasions to get it run)
the final tables show Gordon pipping Paul by a solitary point.

Mike Winter finished a strong third to win his first Grand Prix medal, and there were also strong performances
throughout the year by the ever consistent Norman Clark, David Grey and Hamish McCallister-Williams.

Dumfries Half Marathon !
At the grand old age of 45, Morpeths Paul Waterston achieved his first ever
outright road race victory in the Dumfries Half Marathon on Sunday 26th September.
Paul not only won, he also achieved a brand new personal best of 72m56s,
on what was undoubtedly a very undulating and testing course around the outskirts of the Scottish town.

He bettered his previous figures by almost three minutes,
and would be the first to admit that he achieved this with
a great deal of help from Morpeth clubmate Phil Walker
who finished second in 74m02s,
and was first Over 40 Male Veteran finisher,
in what was a best time as a Veteran.

Both of them had sat in the leading group for the first two miles,
and when a break came the pair of them
trailed the then race leader by about 20 yards.

After a further five miles they got on level terms with the leader,
and Walker managed to take a lead, after a further two miles
Waterston got back on level terms with Walker,
and at this point he put in an extra effort on
an incline to force a gap for himself,
which he managed to extend all the way to the finish line.

Another good Morpeth performance came from Gordon Dixon,
who finished eleventh in 79m04s,
as first Over 50 Male Veteran.

The trio were using this as a final race warm up for the
Abingdon Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 17th October.

Jimmy Bell !
Jimmy Bell
The North East athletics fraternity has been saddened during the last few days
to learn of the passing of one of its finest Veteran athletes at the age of 62.
Sadly Elswick Harrier, and former Claremont Road Runner Jimmy Bell
passed away in the Freeman Hospital, after a long fight with illness over the last two years.

Jimmy fought his illness with all the determination he showed as an athlete,
and his presence will be sadly missed, especially amongst his clubmates at Elswick Harriers,
whom he joined after a long association with Claremont until 1989.

He will always be remembered for his friendly smile,
and the fact that he even had time to offer younger members the soundest advice
they would ever wish to learn about their sport when needed.

Three years ago Jimmy picked up his first individual medal as
a Veteran International in Northern Ireland and he twice won
a silver medal at the London Marathon, having produced
a best time of 2hrs 47mins at the age of 59 in 2007.

Before his illness Jimmy was ranked second in the Over 55 age group for the Half Marathon,
where he recorded an excellent 76mins 18secs in York.

Jim was born, and spent most of his childhood in Morpeth,
however he never joined his hometown club.
His last competitive outing was last August, where despite his prevailing illness,
this much respected man clocked 19m27s in his own clubs promotion the Exhibition Park 5k.

Morpeth Harriers would wish to offer their sincere condolences to his immediate family,
and all of his friends and colleagues at Elswick Harriers, at this a very sad loss.

Jimmy's funeral service took place at West Road Crematorium,
Newcastle, on Tuesday 23rd March.

who are currently in the fourth year of their sponsorship of the event.

Pam began proceedings by saying that she had been delighted with the turnout at all the events,

that it gave all Veterans an opportunity to compete on an equal basis.
Tony also said that he had also been delighted to learn that a number
of Morpeth club veterans had appeared in the top
echelon of the countrys rankings, including that of his wife.

He and Pam also announced that they were also prepared
to sponsor the event for the forthcoming year.

Mike Kelly !
Morpeth Harriers are very sad to learn of the passing of one of their older members and event sponsor.
Mike Kelly, who was a prominent Veteran runner for the club in the late eighties and early nineties,
passed away peacefully at home in Tranwell Woods,on Tuesday 2nd February 2010.

He was also very much instrumental in providing sponsorship
to the annual Morpeth 10k Road Race through his Ashington
based Engineering Company A-Belco, and remained a firm friend of the club.

Mike spent a lot of his years in America,
and he experienced a great deal of running enjoyment,
competing in what were commonly known as Masters events,
and he also enjoyed some success.
He brought some of those successes with him when he returned to England,
and was a member of a good number of Morpeth Harriers Veteran Teams
during a six to seven year period from 1988 to 1995.

Very much remembered by club members
as a well loved mild mannered gentleman when out on training runs,
and was always keen to offer friendly advice when needed,
and was a prolific competitor.

He leaves a devoted family in wife Jill, Daughter Melissa,
and grandchildren Kristy, Angela and Joseph,
and Morpeth Harriers would wish to offer
them sincere condolences at their sad loss.

Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays !
At the Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays on Sunday 22nd January,
an excellent first leg clocking of 10m32s, the fastest of the day,
by Ashley Gibson, set Morpeth Harriers Senior Women's A team
well on the way to an outstanding victory in their three stage relay.
Sarah Wilkinson at Durham on Sunday
The victory was so outstanding, that the legs of Jane Hodgson (10m42s),
and Sarah Wikinson (10m56s), second and third fastest on the day,
saw them take victory by a handsome 160 second margin over Durham University A
team, and a retention of the title that they had won twelve months previous,
with the Morpeth Harriers Senior Womens B team coming home in third spot,
a further sixty seconds adrift.Morag Stead, who had been in the victorious
A team twelve months previous, clocked the B teams fastest time of
11m15s, and that was well supported by Abbie Bagshaw's 11m55s,
and Kate Chapman's 12m40s on the final leg.

Morpeth Harriers Womens C team of Jane Briggs (12m56s),
Claire Bruce (14m12s), and Marie Drosdowicz (13m20s), finished in nineteenth place.

Saltwell Road Race !
Finishing twentieth in 38m04s, Jane Hodgson was Morpeth Harriers
leading athlete in the 100th running of the Ronnie Walker Saltwell 10k Road Race,
held within Gateshead's Saltwell Park on Saturday 17th December.

She was also second Lady finisher, being slightly over two minutes adrift
of Ladies race winner Alison Dixon, of Chester Le Street,
who was making a return to action, following a serious foot injury incurred
in the World Championship Marathon in Daegu.

Dixon broke the Womens course record when clocking 35m59s.
Morpeth Harriers only other leading finisher on the day came
in the Under 15 Girls event, where Alison Brown
finished third behind race winner Lydia Turner in 11m18s.
Turner had improved her own course record by thirteen seconds by clocking 10m26s.

North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships !
At the North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships,
held at East Cramlington Nature Reserve on Saturday 10th December,
despite being without Maxine Czarneka through illness,
Morpeth Harriers Senior Women still managed to pull of an expected team victory.

The Northern Road Relay Champions, now boosted by the added presence
of former Elswick Harrier Ashley Gibson, won by a margin of eleven points over Durham City,
who included former Northern Junior Champion, and former Morpeth Harrier Aiveen Fox,
who emerged as their second counter in tenth place.

Meanwhile Morpeth Harriers led by Gibson (3rd) were outstanding in their win.
For Gibson, who never gave up, despite having to spend much of her race
having to chase down the powerful Rosie Smith (Durham),
and 2010 Champion Kirsty Legg of Middlesbrough Mandale,
a Bronze individual medal was well deserved.

However the addition of a Gold team medal was even more deserved,
following the excellent supporting performances by Jane Hodgson (4th),
and Team boss Sarah Wilkinson, who in finishing sixth was indeed a very inspirational force.

Slightly further down the field were Sarah Graham (19th),
Gemma Floyd (22nd), and newcomer Abi Bagshaw (24th),
whose excellent combined performances would have seen
an excellent B team performance in finishing as fifth best on the day.

Marie Drozdowicz, who is gradually getting back to full fitness
following a painful foot injury, and her finish in 57th place was a very creditable effort.
Margaret MacDonald also ran well to finish in 100th place in a strong field.

2011 Saucony English National Cross Country Relays !
Some of the worst conditions ever faced at the venue,
blighted some athletes individual ambitions at the annual
Saucony English Cross Country Relays, held at Berry Hill Park,
Mansfield on Saturday 5th November.

Morpeth Harriers Senior Womens A team at Mansfield on Saturday
Morpeth Harriers fielded two Senior Womens teams in their event,
and their A team were boosted by the debut of Ashley Gibson (formerly Elswick),
who came home in seventh place on the first leg in 10m35s,
which just outside the top ten best performances of the day.

They maintained this position throughout the three leg event,
with further excellent support coming from Maxine Czarneka (11m15.95s),
and Sarah Wilkinson (11m11.50s).
That placing also saw them finish as second from the North of England,
behind Yorkshire's Bingley Harriers who finished in fifth spot.

Morpeth Harriers B team were 43rd, and were also sixth B team to finish.
Kate Chapman (12m57.35s), Carolyn Booth (formerly Dickie) (12m08.55s),

Davison Shield Meeting !
Morpeth Harriers retained their hold on the Davison Shield trophy,
at Temple Park, South Shields on Saturday 22nd October.

Sarah Wilkinson winning the
Senior Womens race at Temple Park on Saturday 22nd October
There was an excellent individual victory
by Sarah Wilkinson (Senior Women),
however it all came about as a surprise,
as she was unaware that long term leader Danielle Hodgkinson
of Wallsend had in fact gone off course, and had lost so much ground,
she ended up in tenth place overall.

Afterwards, Wilkinson was honest enough to feel some remorse for her unfortunate rival,
and claimed that she had definitely done enough to have won the race comfortably.
Morpeth Harriers Senior Women finished as fourth team on the day,
being led home by the winner Sarah Wilkinson,
with excellent further support coming from Kate Chapman (18th),
and newcomer Abi Bagshaw, whose debut performance
to finish 30th in a field of 117 finishers, opened a few watching eyes.

To ensure success in this competition clubs have to ensure full turnout in all four races by each gender.
In the Womens events (Davison Shield), Morpeth were the only club to fully compete.

Kielder Marathon !
Morpeths Jane Hodgson defied and relished the tough conditions when
making her winning Marathon debut at Kielder on Sunday 9th October.

After starting steadily, she gradually worked her way through the field,
and passed what was then the leading Woman with about four miles remaining.

From that point in there was just no holding the Northern Relay Gold medallist,
as she strode to the finish line in 3hrs06mins45secs, to record nearly a 1min30secs
marginal victory over her closest rival Lucie Custance of Clapham Chasers.

North of England Road Relay Championships !
It was certainly a good weekend at the office for Morpeth Harriers Senior Women athletes,
they won Gold medals for the first time ever
in their North of England 4 Stage Road Relays,
held at Birchwood Business Park,
near Warrington, on Saturday 24th September.

Our Womens team comprising of Melissa Turner (16m39s),
Jane Hodgson (17m05s), Maxine Czarneka (17m11s),
and Sarah Wilkinson (16m51s),
eventually triumphed over early leaders Stockport,
with a healthy winning margin of twenty nine seconds to show for their sterling efforts.
Our Senior Womens team with their Gold Medals at Warrington on Saturday 24th September
Turner's first leg effort saw her finish in fourth place,
and the sixth fastest clocking of the day,
however Jane Hodgson's second leg effort saw them closer
to the medals as she clocked the day's 12th fastest time,
when she came home in second place.

Despite Maxine Czarneka's determined third leg run,
which was 15th overall fastest, she unfortunately slipped a place,
however Sarah Wilkinson removed all doubts towards
the Morpeth Harriers achievement, when she
grabbed the lead by clocking the eighth fastest time.

Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix Update !

So far, 63 club members have taken part in 9 races,
with similar numbers of male and female members;
the next race is our own Morpeth 10k on Tuesday,
for which entries can be taken on the night.

Gordon Smith Memorial Relays !
Sarah Wilkinson was very much the inspirator behind the clubs
Womens team success at the annual Gordon Smith Memorial Relays,
held at Wallsend on Wednesday night. (4th May)

Sarah, not only clocked the nights fastest Womens time of 10m35s,
but also broke Dianne Henaghan's previous Womens course record by an excellent twelve seconds.

Sarah's first leg effort was just the inspiration that Morpeth Harriers
Womens A team required for a twenty six second marginal victory over Elswick Harriers,
with a non scoring Wallsend Harriers composite squad just a further second adrift in third place.

Kate Chapman (12m33s), and Charlotte Wilson (11m30s)

Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races !
Morpeths Sarah Wilkinson comfortably won the Senior Womens event
at the annual Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races,
held at Newburn's Riverside Business Park on April 22nd.

Wilkinson achieved her superb victory in the warm conditions that prevailed,
and the manner and margin that she held over runner up Michelle Holt of Sunderland,
definitely confirmed that the Veteran Scottish International is in a rich vein of form,
in preparation for the European Masters 10,000metres which takes place in Paris next month.

She clocked 12m24s over the 2.28mile course,
which although is still some way outside Dianne Henaghan's course record,
it still shows that she could well rank amongst the favourites for European honours.

That time gave her a twenty nine second margin over Holt,
with Alison Dargie of the host club finishing third, a further fifteen seconds adrift.

Morpeth Harriers finished as third team, with further support
coming from thirteenth placed Ailsa McGregor (14m07s),
who finished third in her own personal battle against fellow Under 17's,
whose race was incorporated into the event,
and Jane Briggs, who finished 22nd in 14m45s,
and was seventh Female Veteran Woman.

Other Morpeth finishers in this event were Claire Bruce (29th) (11th Vet) 16m11s,
Pam Woodcock (37th) (16thVet) 17m00s,

Turner's time ranks eleventh in the current UK listings for the distance,

It was indeed icing on the cake for Jane Mooney,
when she won the Senior Womens event from the Fast Pack,
despite giving four minutes and two minutes start to a good proportion of the field.
She won with nine seconds to spare over Emily Collinge of Gosforth Harriers,
to whom she had given a two minute start, on the toughest of Harrier League courses.

This win certainly confirmed her victory in the Senior Womens Grand Prix stakes for the season.
Morpeth Harriers other runner in this event was Claire Bruce, who placed 39th from the Slow Pack.

Northern Athletics Womens 6 Stage Road Relays !
At the North of England Womens 6 Stage Road Relay Championships,
held at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire on Sunday 20th March,
Morpeth Harriers Senior Women finished fourth behind Wakefield, Leigh and Salford Harriers.

This was indeed an excellent team performance led by the example
of their new Team Manager Sarah Wilkinson.
After Carolyn Dickie's first leg clocking of 13m58s over the
two and a half mile circuit had the squad in 20th place,

Wilkinson took over on leg two, and elevated them up to a superb seventh place,
courtesy of both the third fastest of the leg and tenth fastest overall of 12m46s.

Sarah Graham dropped a couple of places on leg three as she got round in 14m19s,
however despite losing another three places on leg four,
Emma Pearson's 14m32s managed to keep them in contention.

This factor was soon proved as Maxine Czarnecka got them back up to fifth with her clocking of 13m07s.
Jane Mooney got round in an eleventh fastest 12m47s, (second fastest of the leg)
to claim a final fourth place spot by a margin of thirteen seconds.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League !
An excellent turnout by athletes across all the age groups,
saw Morpeth Harriers confirm their supremacy in winning
the Sherman Cup and Davison Shield, (subject to final results scrutiny),
at the fifth and penultimate meeting of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League,
held at Shibdon Pond, Blaydon on Saturday 12th March.

Jane Mooney, having clocked the fastest times at three of the five meetings so far,
has now established a virtually unbeatable lead at the top of the Senior Womens Grand Prix rankings.

On Saturday at Blaydon her contribution not only as an individual,
but also as a superb team player and leader was immense.
After giving two and four minutes start to 93 of her competing opponents,
she worked her way through to finish second,
and led her club to an excellent team victory on the day ahead of Heaton and Wallsend.

Good team support came from Kate Chapman (6th) (Slow Pack),
and Claire Bruce (25th) (Slow Pack).
Other good runs on the day were had by Lucy Sill (53rd) (Slow Pack),
and Collette Jewell (103rd) (Slow Pack)

2010 Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix Report and Ladies Results !
The results for the 2010 Morpeth Harriers Grand Prix,
once again sponsored by Pam and Tony Woodcock Planning,
have now been ratified and the competition has been fierce as ever.

In the Ladies competition with Claire Bruce out injured
for much of the year and so unable to defend her title,
Faye Glover was out front for several months and her lead looked unassailable
till she too picked up an injury in August. As a result, she was gradually reeled in by
2009 Grand Prix runner-up Sue Smith, who was able to go one better this time.
New member Louise Laverton – who finished first female veteran in most of the races she ran last year - challenged
strongly as the season went on, but again ran out of races.
There were also consistent performances from Jane Blackett,
Pam Woodcock, Jane Briggs and Lesley Young.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League !
Athletics activity at the weekend centred round the fourth
Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League meeting,
held at Cardinal Hume School in Wrekenton,
Gateshead, on Saturday 26th February.

Despite some pre-event rain, the course was in good raceable condition,
although there were some heavy patches of ground.

Jane Mooney at Wrekenton
Jane Mooney bounced right back to the top of the leaderboard
in the Senior Womens Grand Prix standings by running the days fastest time,
when coming through to place third overall with a superb performance.
She will also on current form, prove to be a very valuable asset when
representing the region in Birmingham this weekend.

Morpeth Harriers only other finisher in this event was Claire Bruce,
who placed 45th from the Slow Pack, which disappointingly once again
meant there was no team challenge by the club.

North Eastern Counties Royal Signals Road Relays !
The Royal Signals Road Relay Championships,
held at Hetton Lyon Park in County Durham on Saturday 12th February,
saw our Senior Womens squad finish second behind retaining champions
Chester Le Street in their four stage championship.

They achieved their Silver success with an entirely new squad,
with three having transferred from Chester Le Street,
and one having previously run for Glasgow club Garscube.

Kathryn Foley had Morpeth in ninth place with her first leg clocking of 13m58s,
however Sarah Wilkinson soon had the squad in medal contention
when she climbed to second place with her second leg clocking of 12m29s,
which proved to be third fastest overall on the day.

This placing was held throughout the legs of Charlotte Wilson,
and Maxine Czarneka, who clocked 13m46s and 13m13s respectively.
For Wilson it was also her first Championship medal on English soil,
and with Morpeth Harriers.

Morpeth Harriers Senior Womens B team finished a very respectable thirteenth,
with their fastest performer being Under 17 athlete Ailsa McGregor,
who stood up well to the task by clocking 14m17s, and climbed eight places on second leg.

Jessica Caldwell (16m40s), and Lucy Sill (16m58s).

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League !
In very much mudbath conditions, athletes from Morpeth Harriers
gave good account for themselves at the rescheduled third meeting
of the Start Fitness sponsored North Eastern Harrier League,
held on Newcastle's Town Moor, on Sunday 6th February.

Most notable was the run by Jane Mooney,
fresh from her exertions from the previous weeks Northern Cross Country Championships,
Jane bravely battled her way through from the Fast Pack to win the Senior Womens race outright.

She also led her club to seventh team place, with supporting runs
coming from Emma Pearson (27th) (Fast Pack), and Claire Bruce (54th) (Slow Pack).

Durham Cathedral Relays !
Morpeths Womens A Team in action at
the Durham Cathedral Relays
Morpeth Harriers Senior Women secured their second team victory
of 2011 at the 27th Durham Cathedral Relays,
held at the Racecourse venue in Durham City on Sunday 23rd January.

After Carolyn Dickie had them handily settled in eighth place,
with her first leg clocking of 11m04s,
Morag Stead took them up to second place on Leg Two,
with an excellent second fastest clocking of the day of 10m20s,
that also proved to be the fastest Veteran Womens time,
only bettered by Gateshead's Stacey Smith,
who had led everyone home on first leg with an outstanding 9m43s.

It was then down to Morpeth Harriers third leg runner Jane Mooney to chase down the leaders,
who were still Gateshead, with Elswick chasing in third place.
The North Eastern Counties Cross Country Bronze Medallist
was certainly not one to give up on victory,
and eventually she took over the lead as she clocked
what was to be the days fourth fastest time of 10m35s,
and came home commanding a superb 56 second margin
into the bargain as an added bonus to her own performance.

Another good individual Morpeth Harriers Woman performer was Maxine Czarneka.
Sandwiched between the youthful talents of Hannah Rank (12m03s)
and Jessica Caldwell (12m37s), she energised a Non Scoring B team
performance that eventually saw them finish seventh, with an individual 10m50s.

Maxine becomes fully eligible to compete for Morpeth from February 1st,
since her transfer from Chester Le Street, and she will undoubtedly
be a welcome addition to what is already proving to be a very
formidable and forceful Senior Womens squad.

Worthy of mention here also are the encouraging debuts
at this level of Marie Drosdowicz and Jane Briggs
who competed for an incomplete Morpeth Harriers Veteran Womens squad,
and were well up the field, before being unable to finish with a third runner.

North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships !
At the rearranged 2010 North Eastern Counties Counties
Cross Country Championships, held at Temple Park,
South Shields on Saturday 8th January 2011,
history was created by Morpeth Harriers,
when our Senior Ladies team took a Championship title for the very first time,
being led home by a very much on fire Jane Mooney,
who also managed to claim an individual Bronze medal,
adding to the Silver that she won in 2009,
at the expense of her own clubmate Morag Stead,
whom she outsprinted in the finishing straight.

The superb performance by Morpeth Harriers Senior Women,
led home by the aforementioned Jane Mooney and Morag Stead with only one second dividing them,
that saw them win the North East title for the very first time, was further confirmed by Carolyn Dickie,
who finished tenth in her first North East Championship since returning to the region,
and added to that Sarah Graham, also produced a superb run to finish in thirteenth place.

With previous title holders Chester Le Street unable to turn out a full squad,
Morpeth Harriers won by eight points over their closest rivals Heaton Harriers,
with Durham City a further thirteen points adrift in third place.
